Phillipe Noiret plays tv game show host Christian Legagneur and Robin Renucci the journalist Roland Wolf in this slightly offbeat Chabrol thriller. The two protagonists confront each other over the chessboard at both the beginning and end of the film so the chess theme frames their antagonistic relationship.
